Researching the history of the Jewish circus family Strassburger in Hamburg

The research on the Jewish circus family Strassburger led project researcher Martin Holler to the State Archive of Hamburg (StAHH). The port city Hamburg – Germany’s “Gate to the World” – was a popular residence for artists and circus people. The circus family Strassburger had their last residence in Hamburg, too, before they had to leave the country in 1936. The archival collections of the StAHH contain police records on performances, press material including propaganda, and post-war compensation files concerning victims of the Nazi persecution. Biographies of Hugo Strassburger (died in Auschwitz-Birkenau) and his son Adolph (survived in hiding) are in preparation.
